Kashmir: 17 Indian Army-men killed in gunmen strike on Uri army camp

Srinagar/ Chandigarh: As per media reports 17 Indian army personnel were killed and several others injured when militants attacked an army camp in Jammu and Kashmir’s Uri town on Sunday morning.

As per a report in Greater Kashmir, injurred soldiers were airlifted from the border town to the army’s base hospital in Srinagar city as heavy firing continued inside the camp which was attacked around 5.30 a.m. by “fidayeen” militants.

“Gunmen attacked the rear base camp of an infantry battalion and not the headquarters of 12 Brigade in Uri today (Sunday) morning which is posted on the Line of Control (LoC),” several media reports quote “defence sources”.

In New Delhi, India’s Home Minister Rajnath Singh is reported to have cancelled his visit to Russia and the US. He has called for a high-level meeting on Sunday to discuss the situation is Kashmir.

As per latest media updates, Indian Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and Army Chief Gen Dalbir Singh  Suhag are rushing to Kashmir following the attack on the Army camp in Uri.

The incident is bound to affect the situation in Kashmir valley which is witnessing civilian protest against Indian occupation for more than two months now.
