1991 fake encounter of Sikh youth: Ropar court adjourns hearing till August 19

Ropar, Punjab (August 07, 2014): As per information available with the Sikh Siyasat News (SSN), a Ropar court on Monday (August 04) adjourned the hearing of a 1990 alleged fake encounter case till to August 19. It is notable that Punjab director general of police SK Sharma and three other former policemen are accused in this case.

The prosecution evidence is likely to begin on the next hearing.

According to media reports District and sessions judge Amarjot adjourned the case as an appeal by the accused against the charge-sheet was likely to come up for hearing in the Punjab and Haryana high court.

DSP SK Sharma, along with the other accused, former deputy inspector general of police (DIG) SPS Basra, the then station house officer (SHO) Balkar Singh and former assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Gurcharan Singh, was present in the court on Monday.

The court put off the matter to August 19 for production of evidence by prosecution.

It may be recalled that the court had framed charges against all four accused under sections 364 (kidnapping), 302 (murder), 201 (destroying evidence), 120 B (criminal conspiracy) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code on June 3, 2014.

Kuldeep Singh (21), along with his cousin Jasmeet Kaur, had gone to Morinda to get medicines from a doctor on October 24, 1990.

“He was picked up by the police in a white-colour van” according to the complaint filed by his father.

After police showed Kuldeep Singh untraceable in its report, his father Ajaib Singh had approached the court.
