Changes in Nanakshahi Calendar will further divide the Sikhs, says Dal Khalsa

Hoshiarpur (January 06, 2010): Contesting the views expressed by Giani Gurbachan Singh, the Jathedar of Akal Takht Sahib that the changes in the Nanakshahi calendar would unite the Sikhs, the Dal Khalsa observed that instead it would further divide the community.
The radical Sikh group has taken exception over the manner the Jathedar Akal Takht has ratified the decision of the SGPC to dilute the Nanakshahi Calendar without calling a meet of the Jathedars of the five Takhts.

In a statement party head H S Dhami and spokesperson Kanwarpal Singh said the ratification by Giani Gurbachan Singh, would definitely lead the Sikh nation into another round of internecine struggle with the whole community vertically divided into two sides –those who are in favour of the original calendar and those who have prevailed upon the SGPC and the SAD leadership to tamper with it.
Accepting the challenge posed by the SAD that runs the SGPC, Dal Khalsa has decided to take the issue of Nanakshahi Calendar to the general masses.

The leaders targeted Gaini Gubachan Singh for playing biased role during the entire process. “He (jathedar) could have played a positive and much better role. Instead of siding with either party, he could have used his good offices to bring rapprochement to both the warring factions”. The post of the jathedar was above partisan but Gaini Gurbachan Singh has failed to keep the status intact, said the release.

Taking SGPC head to task for befooling the Sikhs by claiming that “there was no tampering with calendar”, they said the executive committee of the SGPC has killed the letter and spirit of the calendar. The SGPC head and Sant Samaj were speaking lie to hide their blunders, they alleged. “Contrary to bringing the community closer, the changes has further deepen the gap”.
