Chandigarh: The Black Prince, a Hollywood movie on Maharaja Duleep Singh’s life and struggle has triggered discussion in Sikh intellectual circles of Punjab that his remains should be brought back to Punjab and his last rites should be performed as per Sikh traditions. The Black Prince, released on 21 July, has garnered worldwide appreciation.
A press release by Kendri Sri Guru Singh Sabha (Chandigarh) stated that [t]he Sikhs cherish fond memories of the last King of Punjab, Maharaja Duleep Singh, who died 120 years ago in Europe and lies buried in Elveden in England. He was swindled of his Khalsa Raj and duped into Christianity by the British.
Both as a Sikh and as the last sovereign ruler of the united Punjab, his rightful resting place is amongst his people, said a gathering of prominent Sikhs at Kendri Sri Guru Singh Sabha held few days back.
They said the Maharaja regretted his conversion to Christianity and returned to the Sikh faith by partaking “Amrit” at Aden. Thereafter, he made a great struggle to regain his lost empire till his death.
The gathering resolved that the ashes of the Maharaja be brought to Punjab for performing the last rites as per Sikh tradition, the faith he belonged to.
The meeting also decided to mobilise the Sikhs and resources for erecting a befitting memorial in Punjab for their last soveriegn King.
They also decided to take up the matter with the concerned authorities at the earliest and pledged their support to every genuine effort in this direction.
The meeting was participated among others by G.S.
