Chandigarh: Bhartiya Janta Party leader and Member of Indian Parliament for Rajya Sabha Subramanian Swamy has come under fire for asking the Government to India to backtrack from Kartarpur Sahib corridor. Subramanian Swamy on Saturday (August 25) demanded that the work on the Kartarpur corridor be immediately stopped.
“There should not be any talks with Pakistan, keeping in view the interest of our country. In my opinion, the work on the Kartarpur project should be stopped. Whatever work has been done, let it be stopped there. We should not have any dialogue or relations with Pakistan,” he told journalists in Chandigarh.
Various Sikh and Punjabi sections have taken strong notice of Subramanian Swamy’s statement. Damdami Taksal (Mehta) chief Baba Harnam Singh strongly condemned BJP leader’s statement and warned him against issuing non-serious statements on such a sensitive issue. In a written statement issued on Aug 25 Baba Harnam Singh said that Subramanian Swamy should refrain from raising hurdles against completion of Kartarpur Sahib corridor.
Sikh intellectuals, including S. Gurtej Singh (former IAS), Prof. Gurdarshan Singh, Gurpreet Singh (Institute of Sikh Studies), Jaspal Singh Sidhu (Senior Journalist), Rajinder Singh (Khalsa Panchayat) and Khushal Singh (Kendri Sri Guru Singh Sabha) criticised Subramanian Swamy’s statement and called upon Indian prime minister Narendra Modi to clear his government’s stand on Kartarpur Sahib corridor. These intellectuals said that the Kartarpur Sahib corridor must be opened.
In a strong worded statement Aam Aadmi Party MLAs Prof. Baljinder Kaur, Rupinder Kaur Ruby, Manjit Singh Bilaspur, Kulwant Singh Pandori and Jai Kishan Rori demanded apology from Subramaniyan Swamy. They further demanded that the BJP should oust Swamy from party ranks.
AAP leaders said that the opening of Kartarpur Sahib corridor holds special significance as Sikhs have been praying for past seven decades to visit Guru Nanak Ji’s Kartarpur.
They said that enemies of humanity were out to use religion as a weapon to raise obstructions in the opening of Kartarpur Sahib corridor. AAP leaders said that people of both India and Pakistan should remain cautious about such elements.
