Chandigarh: A number of commenters, activists and thinkers held a meeting in Chandigarh on Tuesday (Jan. 7) and condemned brutal attack by masked armed goons on JNU students.
Those who participated in the meeting included Gurtej Singh, Dr. Gurdarshan Singh Dhillon, Dr. Khushhal Singh, Prof. Manjit Singh, Dr. Pyare Lal Garg, Jaspal Singh Sidhu, Gurpreet Singh (Global Sikh Council), Muhammad Sadiq Shekh (Muslim Welfare Society), Moulana Imran Mjaddidi, Mufti Mujammad Anas Qksmi, Haji Muhammad Younus, Hafiz Muhammad Khalid and Kishan Kumar (Bahujan Kranti Morcha).
A statement issued after the meeting reads:
[T]he shocking and condemnable Sunday violence at JNU Delhi is a stern warning to all even headed Indians particularly to Dalits and minorities that the BJP-led Union Government has been mounting upon authoritarian steps one after the other to boost its ideological project of building Hindu Rashtra.
Surreptitious unleashing of goons on peaceful students and teachers at the JNU is a painful and terse reminder of the 1980s– which was then ignored by the Indian liberal and Left– when the Hindu Rashtra began spreading its tentacles with the suppression and massacre of Sikhs, the Sikh intellectuals assembled here today said.
The apocalyptic politics of Indira Gandhi which isolated and targeted the Sikh minority has now become a prominent feature of the Modi government branding minorities and the Left activists as ‘anti-nationals’ and ‘tukde-tukde gang’ needed to be taught a tight lesson by ‘warriors of Hindutva’. In quick series, after degrading Kashmir, securing Supreme Court verdict in favour of those who demolished 500 years old Babri Mosque and enacting religion-based Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) that excludes Muslims, Narendra Modi-Amit Shah duo has now picked up the Hindu mythical Parasuram Kulhara (axe) against the JNU students, most of them hailing from the marginalized society and relaunched destroying the ace university- the Hindutva task was earlier taken up in 2016.
On Sunday evening, the ABVP, the students wing of the ruling BJP mobilised 50-60 masked goons armed with sticks and iron rods in the university who fell upon the elected office-bearers of students’ union holding a protest meeting against the increase in fees. The heavy Delhi police present there remained a mute witness to the goon attack which saw 40 students and teachers injured, some of them seriously, including union president Aishe Ghosh. Raising slogans like ‘Jai Shri Ram’, ‘Afzal (Guru) ki maut maroge’ the attackers rampaged the campus for three years before making their unhindered exit.
We notice with some consolation that the JNU violence has generated a country-wide indignation and protests among the students and saner people but the government with the help of the plaint media is attempting to create a binary that the violence was the reaction to the prolonged and disruptive protests by left-leaning students.
We appeal to the people to see through the Hindutva attempts of creating Indian version of Ku Klux Klan goons with active support of state power to mask its majoritarian moves bound to destroy the semblance of Indian democracy, harmony, and peace. We should resist the Hindutva indoctrinated narrative of nationalism and as an antidote to it strive to restore federalism and regionalism.
