Chandigarh/Punjab (December 16, 2012): In a press release All India Sikh Students Federation (AISSF) president Karnail Singh Peer Mohammad and Baljit Singh Khalsa has narrated the tragic tale of Bibi Satwant Kaur who has been waiting for justice for the past 28 years.
Bibi Satwant Kaur saw the brutal killing of 24 members of her family who were charred to death during genocidal violence against the Sikhs that was perpetuated after the assassination of Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1984, in the streets of Delhi.
It is notable that thousand of Sikh were massacred during Sikh Genocide of November 1984.
Married to Baldev Singh, Satwant Kaur had come to Delhi to attend the wedding of her nephew in the Mayapuri locality of Delhi. Unable to withhold her tears, Kaur told how the women of the family were crying and begging the mob to spare the lives of the innocent Sikh men but to no avail. The men folk were pulled forcefully out of the house and were beaten mercilessly and later burnt to death by using some inflammable powder.
Satwant Kaur’s husband and father succumbed to their injuries in front of their eyes while her seven year old nephew, who witnessed all this, lost his mental balance and has n ever been able to come out of the nightmare.
Satwant Kaur and her sister-in-law who lost their families shifted to Punjab post the killings in Delhi. She has been living with her-in-laws and children in Amritsar ever since.
It’s been 28 years but she can never forget the fateful night to November 31; 1984.
Peer Mohammad and Baljit Singh Khalsa questioned the passive attitude of the Centre in attending to the cases of 1984 victims and asked how long the community will await for justice, terming it as denial of justice.
