Ludhiana, Punjab (November 22, 2012): According to EcoSikh, a US based NGO, has invited the Sikhs settled all across the world to finalize their plan of action for celebrating the Sikh Environment day, which would fall next year on March 14.
According to EcoSikh following an awareness drive launched by Sikh organizations over the past few years to protect environment, several religious places have initiated steps like switching to solar energy for Gurdwara kitchens, which are now being emulated by others.
“Since 2011, Sikhs have been celebrating March 14 as Sikh Environment Day throughout the world to mark the enthronement day of Sri Guru Har Rai ji, the saviour of flora and fauna. On the first year, more than 400 Gurdwaras, schools, business, and communities marked this occasion. Last year more than 1000 Sikh organizations and institutions did so, including some of Sikhism’s largest organizations such as SGPC, the DSGMC, Sri Hazur Sahib, Anandpur Sahib, over 25 Gurdwaras from North America, the Sikhs in the British Army and 25 Gurdwaras from Pakistan as well,” a newsletter by EcoSikh’s informed while urging Sikh Gurdwaras and organizations to chose an activity to mark the day.
After March 14 celebrations, this year, many Sikh organizations took positive steps to protect Mother Earth, like setting up of the Golden Temple Solar Kitchen plan and Leicester’s Guru Tegh Bahadur Gurdwara in the UK switching to solar energy and Haryana’s plantation drive, a spokesman of EcoSikh said adding that organizations could chose from a variety of programmes like ‘buta Prasad (sapling donation), flower show, plantation drive, bicycle rally, painting competitions for schools or preparing their own nursery to mark the day.
