Hundreds participated in Sikh sovereignty march towards New York based UN headquarters

New York, United States (June 09, 2014): It is learnt that hundreds of Sikhs from New York and neighboring States took part in a “Sovereignty March” outside the United Nations Headquarters on June 06, 2014. The march was organized by US based Human Rights and advocacy group called “Sikhs for Justice”. The march was held to mark the 30th anniversary of Indian army attack on Darbar Sahib (Amritsar) and other Sikh gurdwaras in June 1984.

According to a news reported by Sikh24, [t]his year, organizers issued a “Referendum 2020″ asking the Sikh diaspora in United States to express its opinion seeking a sovereign Sikh Nation.

The referendum stated, “I aspire for the formation of a sovereign and independent country in Indian occupied Punjab, on the basis that Sikhs are the indigenous people of Punjab, have a historical homeland, a separate religion and have the right to self-determination”.

A number of renowned Sikh speakers and independent human rights activists were present at the march.

In addition to the referendum, Sikhs For Justice asked the United Nations to probe Indian Army attack on Sri Harmandir Sahib, and other Sikh gurdwaras across India in which thousands of Sikhs were massacred by the army. Indian army had used tanks to destroy the Akal Takht Sahib and Sikh reference library was also reduced to ashes by the Indian army.
