After Charanjit Sharma, Now Sumedh Saini Moves High Court Against Justice Ranjit Singh Commission’s Report

October 11, 2018 | By

Chandigarh: Punjab’s former Director-General of Police (DGP) Sumedh Singh Saini has reportedly moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court against Justice Ranjit Singh Commission’s report. While probing Behbal Kalan firing case, Justice Ranjit Singh Commission has identified the role of former police chief in the firing incident in which two Sikhs were killed in cold blood by the police.

Media reports have noted that “though the contents of the petition are being kept closely guarded secret, information suggests that Saini is seeking directions to the state and other respondents that probe should not be carried out by the Punjab Police in case of allegations against him”.

A report in The Tribune notes that [i]t is believed that Saini is also seeking a probe by an independent agency such as the Central Bureau of Investigation in such an eventuality.

It is learnt that the petition has been listed before Justice Gurvinder Singh Gill and is scheduled to come up for hearing on Thursday (October 11) morning.

It is notable that inaction on Justice Ranjit Singh Commission’s report points towards lack of political will of Amarinder Singh led Congress government in Punjab to proceed against the culprits, including the accused cops and political leaders belonging to the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) whose role was identified by the Commission in its report.

The Punjab government is also accused of facilitating the accused cops, including former Moga SSP Charanjit Sharma to get proceedings against him stayed from the Punjab and Haryana High Court as the government did not make any on time representation in the court against Charanjit Sharma’s petition against Justice Ranjit Singh Commission’s report.
