Ajit Poohla case: 3 acquitted by trial court of Amritsar for lack of evidence

Amritsar, Punjab (May 20, 2014): As per information a trial court of Amritsar has acquitted three persons accused of killing notorious police cat and dummy Nihang chief Ajit Poohla for lack of evidence. The decision in this regard was pronounced by District Sessions court (Amritsar) on May 20, 2014.

Ajit Poohla was second name of state terror in the border belt of Punjab during late-1980-to mid-1990s. Poohla had once enjoyed a high-security cover with 42 official gunmen and 77 sophisticated weapons. He was arrested on May 13, 2008, from Darhewal Kotli village in connection with the murder of seven members of the family of one Joga Singh, a resident of Khanpur village.

After several police witnesses turned hostile, Justice Gurbir Singh finally acquitted Navtej Singh, Harchand Singh and Harpreet Singh.

It is ntoable that the police had charged total six persons in this case. Other three accused had already been discharged by the trial court.

Ajit Poohla, who was facing trial for rape, murder and other heinous crimes, was set ablaze allegedly by Navtej Singh and Harchand Singh in the high-security Amritsar Central Jail on August 28, 2008.

According to the police case they had allegedly taken diesel from the generator of the jail and sprinkled it in the cell where Ajit Poohla was lodged. Thereafter, they allegedly set him ablaze. Ajit Poohla sustained around 70 per cent burn injuries on his face and chest and died at PGIMER in Chandigarh a day after the attack.

Defence council Advocate Dilbagh Singh Attari said there were nearly 24 police witnesses in the case who later turned hostile.

Sikh organization Dal Khalsa hailed the decision and said justice had finally prevailed.
