New Delhi, India (May 21, 2014): It is learnt that the Supreme Court on Wednesday (May 21, 2014) commuted death sentence of two convicts to life imprisonment, who were involved in an attack on American Center (Kolkata) in 2002.
As per media reports the attack took place on January 26, 2002 in which five people, including four policemen, were killed.
In this case seven people were tried, five were given varying terms of imprisonment and two were sentenced to death by the trial court. The same was upheld by Calcutta high court.
According to HindustanTimes (HT), the Supreme court bench of Justice AK Patnaik and Justice Fakkir Mohamed Ibrahim Kalifulla while commuting the death sentence held that Aftab Ahmed Ansari, one of the convicts, will undergo life imprisonment till the end of his life.
The other convict Jamaluddin Nasir will undergo life imprisonment of 30 years without any remission.
