Amrith Kaur Appointed as New Legal Director of the Sikh Coalition

New York: The Sikh Coalition announced Amrith Kaur as new Legal Director of the US based civil rights group. A release by the NGO states that Amrith Kaur will assume leadership of the Sikh Coalition’s free legal program.

“Outgoing Legal Director, Harsimran Kaur, will remain with the organization in a part-time strategic legal consulting role and will also provide training, support and institutional memory to the legal program”, reads the statement.

“Amrith Kaur joins the Sikh Coalition team with eleven years of litigation experience working as an assistant state’s attorney in Cook County, Illinois. During this time, she served on Cook County’s Hate Crime Advisory Council, served as a liaison with the Department of Justice’s Hate Crime Training Initiative, and led successful projects to identify non-violent offenders for alternative rehabilitation programs”, the statement reads further.

“The community should continue to expect the very best high impact legal work as we work to secure future landmark victories that protect Sikhs against hate, bullying and employment discrimination,” said Sikh Coalition Executive Director, Sapreet Kaur. “We know that Amrith has the legal expertise and leadership experience that will build on the incredible work that Harsimran has done for this organization”, she added.

In addition to Amrith Kaur’s significant legal experience, she also arrives with a strong understanding of the Sikh Coalition’s work. After 9/11, she co-drafted a Senate resolution that successfully strengthened existing hate crime prosecution and participated in the grassroots activism that led to the formation of the organization.

“Since 2007, Harsimran has been the driving force behind many of our legal accomplishments and strengthened the Sikh Coalition’s reputation as one of the most successful nonprofit civil rights organizations in the country. Through her leadership, we have successfully challenged government agencies, Fortune 500 companies, the U.S. military and defended the rights of Sikhs to practice their faith. Moving forward, she will remain a key advisor, and will work with Amrith to ensure a smooth transition” the Sikh Coalition said in a statement.
