Amritsar, Punjab (August 8, 2014): Ranjit Singh Rana, a former SAD leader and an accused in the murder of Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Ravinder Pal Singh was Saturday awarded life imprisonment till death by a court here. His three accomplices were also awarded the same sentence.
The court of Addl. District & Sessions Judge Harpreet Kaur Randhawa ordering rigorous imprisonment till death for the four accused also imposed a fine of Rs. 2,000 each on all of them.
Expressing dissatisfaction over the court verdict, Robinjeet Kaur, the daughter of the slain ASI, said that they would approach the higher court and demand death sentence for the accused.
“I myself was present on the spot when the accused killed my father and I have deposed before the court. What else remains to be seen. The accused deserve death sentence for what they have done to my father”, she said while talking to the media outside the court.
Ranjit Singh Rana son of Rashpal Singh, a general secretary of the district unit of the SAD, and a resident of Chhiden village who lived in Chheharta had with the help of his accomplices, assaulted ASI Ravinder Pal Singh in full public view and thereafter shot him dead with his own rifle on December 5, 2012.
The incident took place in busy marketplace at Chhehrata. Though the crime took place was a few metres away from Chheharata police station, police reached the spot only after half an hour.
The ASI, in his police uniform, had come to the rescue of his daughter who was being stalked and harassed by Rana.
It may be recalled that Rana used to stalk and harass the daughter of the ASI who as required under law had handed over a complaint against Ranjit Singh Rana to the Chheharta SHO Ashwani Kumar, but the SHO failed to take any action against the Akali leader. The SHO was later dismissed by DGP Sumedh Singh Saini.
ASI Ravinder Pal Singh, who was then posted in Gharinda police station, had as a father come to the rescue of his daughter and when he objected to Rana’s advances and harassment of his daughter in a public place, he was done to death.
So much so that Rana left the injured ASI at the spot, went back to his home and shot dead the ASI with his Rifle, he has brought from his home.
The ASI was then ready to be moved to a hospital in a Car. Rana fired at the car breaking its glass and then at the ASI. He shot ASI in the chest from close range in full public view and before the eyes of his daughter.
He even tried to kill the girl but could not as his rifle developed a snag. However one of her hands got injured.
The accused in the much-hyped case were arrested by the police a few days later.
The importance of the case can be gauged from the fact that DGP Sumedh Saini giving information about the arrest of Rana had then told the media that “SSPs of five districts including Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, Kapurthala, Gurdaspur and Commissioner Amritsar along with the force of 1,000 policemen, 60 SHOs, 30 DSPs carried out massive search and raids and finally nabbed the accused from Rajokey village of Tarn Taran district.”
Rana was appointed district general secretary of the SAD for his ‘services to the party’ by district SAD chief Upkar Singh. Rana reportedly had “suspicious” past as he had been involved in a number of brawls in Amritsar. After the incident, Rana was expelled from the party.
SAD district president Upkar Singh Sandhu had then said that Rana, who was inducted in the party in September, had been expelled with immediate effect. He had told the media that there was no place for criminals in the party.
It may not be out of place to mention here that Robinjeet Kaur, the daughter of the ASI was appointed Naib Tehsildar by the government of Punjab. The ASI’s son was in Australia at the time of murder of his father.
Rana had on January 1, 2014 Wednesday tried to escape out of Amritsar Central Jail where was lodged. He tried to escape with another fellow prisoner Sewa Singh but the escape attempt was foiled by the alert security guards of the jail.
Deputy Supdt., Amritsar Central Jail Mr. D.S.Bhullar had then told your news-portal YesPunjab.com that Ranjit Singh Rana son of Rashpal Singh and Sewa Singh son of Balbir Singh made the attempt at about 3.00 am on 1st of January.
“They cut the iron rods of their ‘Chakki’ with a hand saw blade and tried to make good their escape at about 3.00 am. However, they were spotted by a jail guard in the open area inside the jail, who raised an alarm. The guards immediately came into action, overpowered the two and locked them back”, Bhullar claimed.
He said that the blade used for cutting the iron bars of ‘Chakki’ has been recovered and the Commissioner of Police, Amritsar has been informed of the incident with a request to get a case registered against the two accused for their attempt to escape.
