Balwinder Singh Bhikhiwind Shot Dead by Unidentified Armed Men

Tarn Taran: As per media reports, two armed men shot dead Balwinder Singh Bhikhiwind on Friday. Balwinder, 62, who had Leftist leanings, was instrumental to Indian state against Sikh militants during 1980s-90s. He had taken arms from the Indian state and had even erected bunkers on the roof of his house.

He was assassinated at Bhikhiwind today. A report in The Tribune reads: “[a]ccording to information, no sooner did Balwinder open the gate of the school he used to run than the men who were waiting for him fired at him. He took five bullets in all and was rushed to hospital where doctors declared him brought dead”.

Police have reached the spot and are working on various theories.

SP (Operations) Jagjit Singh Walia said the attackers came in a four-wheeler, while others claimed they were on a motorcycle, notes The Tribune (TT).

Reasons for the incident were not known till the time of writing this news.

Balwinder, popularly known as Comrade Balwinder Singh, was an activist of the CPM for a long time but left the party and joined the Congress few years back under the leadership of Harminder Singh Gill.

Balwinder award by the Indian state for allying with the state forces against Sikh struggle for freedom of 1980-90s. He was reportedly very close to CPM leader Harkrishan Singh Surjit.

The state had provided light machine guns, carbines, AK-47 and even wireless sets to Punjab comrades who had allied with the state forces against the Sikh fighters and their supporters.
