Chandigarh (March 29, 2010): A special court on Monday convicted Bhai Paramjit Singh Bheora in the 1995 assassination of former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh. Bheora was held guilty by additional district and sessions judge Ravi Kumar Sondhi in the trial held in the high security model jail here. The sentence will be announced on Tuesday.

PS Bheora is convicted for criminal conspiracy and for his involvement in the assassination of then Punjab chief minister Beant Singh by a suicide bomber, Dilawar Singh, on August 31, 1995, at the high-security Punjab civil secretariat complex. Bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara and Balwant Singh Rajoana were sentenced to death in 2007 in the same case. In January 2004, Hawara and Bheora, along with two other prisoners, had escaped from the Burail jail through an over 100-feet tunnel that they had dug through their barrack. They were arrested later by Delhi Police. Beant Singh was guilty of ordering mass level massacre of Sikhs that was carried under leadership of Punjab Police butchar KPS Gill. He was assessinated by these Sikhs as there was other way to brought him to justice.

It is tradition of Punjab to bring culpurits to justice by eliminating them if there is no other way to do so. Bhagat Singh and Udham Singh had also followed this path, and Bhagat Singh was sentenced under same Law (Indian Penal Code) that is applied to “punish” assessins Beant Singh.
