Patiala/ Chandigarh, Punjab (September 21, 2013): It is learnt that Sikh political prisoner Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana, who is facing death penalty in India has been was rushed to a Rajindra Hospital, Patiala on September 21, 2013 after he complained pain in his chest.
“Rajoana was admitted to Rajindra Medical College and Hospital after he was taken there from the Central Jail here following complaint of chest pain”, a news reported by Business Standard reads.
Hospital Principal K. D. Singh reportedly told PTI a three-member Board of doctors was constituted to examine Rajoana.
Tests conducted on Rajoana were found satisfactory, he said.
However, Rajoana had been referred to PGIMER Chandigarh for detailed examination, Singh said. The death row prisoner was discharged from the hospital and taken back to the Central Jail. He would be taken to PGIMER soon under tight security arrangements, a jail official said.
It is notable that Indian state had declared the date of execution of Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana in March 2012, but his execution was postponed after the SGPC and Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) filed a review petition with President of India against his death penalty.
The Indian state’s attempt to execute Rajoana in March 2012 received bitter reaction from the Sikh masses. During past few months there had been rumours regarding Rajoana being shifted to Tihar Jail of Delhi for execution. It is believed that Indian state may decide to shift Rajoana out of Punjab for execution as his execution may evoke strong reactions from the Sikh masses in Punjab.
