Amritsar/Gurdaspur, Punjab (January 06, 2012):It is learnt that the Sikh nation shall be remembering Shaheed Satwant Singh and Shaheed Kehar Singh on their martyrdom day on January 06. Due were sentenced to death in Indira Gandhi murder case by an Indian court and were executed by hanging on January 06, 1989.
Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India had ordered an armed attack on various Sikh Gurudwaras, including Sri Darbar Sahib of Amritsar, in June 1984. Thousands of Sikh pilgrims were massacred by army in an attack for which heavy machine guns and tanks were also used.
On October 31, 1984 Indira Gandhi was shot dead by Bhai Beant Singh and Bhai Satwant Singh. Bhai Beant Singh was killed by other body guards of Indira Gandhi and Bhai Satwant Singh was incurred with a gun shot.
Bhai Satwant Singh and Bhai Kehar Singh were charged with murder and conspiracy to murder in this case and were sentenced to death.
It is notable that trio- Bhai Beant Singh, Bhai Satwant Singh and Bhai Kehar Singh were declared “National martyrs of the Sikhs” by Sri Akal Takhat Sahib and their martyrdom day is annually observed at Gurudwara Jhanda-Bunga Sahib near Sri Akal Takhat Sahib.
As per information available with Sikh Siyasat News (SSN) the martyrdom day of Bhai Satwant Singh and Bhai Kehar Singh shall also be observed on January 06 at Village Agwan near Kalanaur, Gurdaspur. Agwan is native village of Bhai Satwant Singh and a Gurudwara Sahib is built near Kalanaur to Dera Baba Nanak road in the memory of Bhai Satwant Singh.
