Jalandhar, Punjab (October 25, 2013): It is learnt that Bhariya Janta Party (BJP), an ally with the Badal Dal, has condemned the Bathinda MP Harsimrat Badal for her statement regarding Rahul Gandhi’s comments on assassination of his grandmother Indira Gandhi. As per media reports BJP said that “such statements demoralise security forces”.
Harsimrat Badal in an interview with NDTV had said: “[i]t was there for anybody to tell you that the entire youth of Punjab was wiped out in the name of terrorism. What was Mr Gandhi thinking? What was Mrs Gandhi doing at that time when she was killing other people’s sons and husbands?… a place of worship which is worshipped by every Sikh…she goes, gives orders to demolish that place and kill people there. What did she think? She would get away with it scot- free?”.
“And then when Mr Rahul’s father – after his mother paid the price for her deed – he targetedly gives instructions to finish off every Sikh, when he says that the ground shakes when a big tree falls what was he indicating? And then his goons of the likes of Sajjan Kumar and Jagdish Tytler and other in a targeted manner pull out Sikhs from their homes and in front of young children, young mothers and old mothers, their husbands, children and grandchildren are slaughtered in thousands not just one or two. Mr Rahul Gandhi does not feel their pain when he, for 30 years, shielded the perpetrators of these crimes.”, she had added.
In a quick reaction to Harsimrat Badal’s remarks, BJP vice-president Laxmi Kanta Chawla, said: “People from all communities were killed during militancy in Punjab. Harsimrat Kaur should explain why this happened”.
Lakshmi Kanta Chawla said “terrorists” (a terms apparently used for Sikh martyrs by Lakshmi Kanta Chawla) in Punjab are being called martyrs and their relatives are being honored.
“Will Harsimrat Kaur will describe it as correct?” Chawla reportedly said.
It is notable that in June 1984 Indian army had attached various Sikh Gurdwaras including Harmandar Sahib at Amritsar. Hundreds of innocent Sikh devotees were massacred by the Indian Army in this attack that was code-named as Operation Blue Star. Indira Gandhi was assassinated by Bhai Beant Singh and Bhai Satwant Singh on 31 October 1984 for ordering the June 1984 attack. Bhai Beant Singh and Bhai Satwant Singh have been recognized as “National Sikh Martyrs” by Akal Takht and their martyrdom day is marked annually at Akal Takht Sahib.
