Brampton, Canada: In a Facebook post, Brampton NDP MPP Gurrattan Singh said that he was deeply concerned about the recent acts of violence in the Region of Peel.
“Violence has no place in our community. We must work not only to ensure that our streets and communities are safe, but also to address the root causes of violence”, said he.
“I am thankful to everyone that attended and took part in Sunday’s town hall and applaud the recommendations that were made. I, along with all other Brampton NDP MPP- Elects, are committed to creating a safe and healthy community that all our families and children deserve”, he added.
With aforesaid comments he posted following written statement on the matter:
“We are alarmed and heartbroken at the recent violence that has gripped several neighborhoods in the Peel community. As your Brampton representatives, we are asking anyone that might have information to contact local authorities, and we’re asking the provincial government to take an active role in addressing the violence, and its root causes. When violence remains unaddressed, it tears us apart and prolongs the suffering of all those that it impacts.
We look forward to the perpetrators being brought to justice — but, we also need to see investments in neighbourhood building, anti-poverty and settlement initiatives, as well as youth programming that stops violence before it starts.
Our communities are stronger when we come together and we thank everyone that attended and took part in the dialogue at Sunday’s townhall. We also applaud the recommendations many brought forward. As MPP-elects, we’re committed to creating solutions that engage multiple community stakeholders and holding the government accountable to address the numerous concerns raised. Recognizing the systemic and root causes that create unsafe communities, and addressing those root causes, is how we’ll continue to build the community all Brampton families deserve.”
