Canada: Conservatives are wrong to think parents are a burden: says NDP

October 18, 2013 | By

Ottawa, Canada (October 18, 2013): In a press release sent to the Sikh Siyasat News (SSN) the New Democrats have strongly criticized Minister of State for Multiculturalism Tim Uppal for indicating in a recent interview with a Vancouver TV station that family reunification is a burden on Canada.

“The Minister’s suggestion that children think of their parents as a burden when they age is absolutely false,” said Official Opposition Multiculturalism Critic Andrew Cash (Davenport).

“It is unacceptable to hear the Conservatives say our parents are a burden when it comes to immigration. Comments like these demonstrate that the Conservatives just don’t understand the importance of family in the South Asian community,” Cash said.

“Currently, families are kept apart for as long as nine years before they can be reunited. Cash added that wait times for family sponsorship have actually lengthened during the Conservatives’ time in office” reads the press release sent to SSN by Amneet Singh, Press Secretary of NDP.

“New Democrats believe that a strong, efficient family reunification program must be prioritized. Knowing that you can sponsor your parent is important, especially from countries like Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, India and Pakistan where parents and grandparents are considered a valuable and integral component of the family”, that statement/press release reads further.

“That’s why under the leadership of Tom Mulcair, New Democrats will continue to make family reunification a central priority in Canada’s immigration policy. Canadians deserve better.”
