Chinese soldiers reappear in Chumar area of Ladhakh after brief withdrawal

New Delhi, India: The Chinese PLA soldiers reportedly left Chumar area of Ladakh after Narendra Modi and Xi Jinping meeting, but there are reports that Chinese soldiers have again crossed into territory under Indian control again and stationed themselves on a hillock.

Media reports say about 35 Chinese soldiers returned to Chumar in northeast Ladakh on Sept. 19. They are occupying a hillock claiming the area to be part of China while another 300 soldiers were maintaining presence close to line of actual control (LAC).

The standoff in Demchok and Chumar had cast a shadow on Thursday’s summit talks between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The Indian Army, which had starting scaling down operations from the area following the Chinese withdrawal last night, put a halt and again started pitching their tents for a possible fresh stand-off.

During a joint press briefing visiting Chinese President Xi Jinping incidents may continue to occur at India-China border as the areas were not properly demarcated.

In his addressing head of China said: “China-India boundary issue is a problem which has troubled both sides for long. The China-India border areas have maintained peace and tranquility. As the area is yet to be demarcated, there may be some incidents”.

India and China have long-standing differences over the demarcation of boundaries and India accuses China for making repeated violations of Line of Actual Control (LAC) in certain sectors of Ladakh.

Chumar is one of the very few places along the Line of Actual Control where access to the border areas is easier from the Indian side and this place has witnessed several face-off situations in the last two-three years.
