Karachi, Pakistan (July 19, 2013): According to a news reported by “The News”: Sindh police Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) special branch has been directed to investigate the recurring incidents of desecration of Sri Guru Granth Sahib in the province of Sindh in Pakistan. The decision came at a meeting between the Sindh chief secretary and an eight-member delegation of Pakistan Sikh Council on July 18, 2013.

The Sikh delegation, led by Sardar Ramesh Singh, informed Muhammad Ijaz Chaudhry about the problems and discrimination being faced by the people of the minority community living in Sindh.

The Sikh delegation reportedly told the chief secretary about the recent incidents of desecration of Guru Granth Sahib in the Sikh temples of Kashmore, Shikarpur and Ghotki, which were under the administration of Hindu Panchayat.

The Sikh representatives said that the Hindu council had been using various tactics and incentives to convert the Sikhs to Hinduism. The recurring desecration incidents of Sri Guru Granth Sahib could mar the situation for minorities dwelling in Sindh, they warned.

The Sindh chief secretary reportedly assured the delegation that the government would adopt a firm strategy within the framework of binding rules and regulations for protection and safety of minorities and resolution of their problems.

Chaudhry directed the provincial sectary for minority affairs Ali Mumtaz Zaidi to contact prominent leaders of Hindu community in Sindh for resolution of Sikhs living in the province. He ordered the AIG Special Branch to probe incidents mentioned by the Sikh community and submit his report on the issue to the government.

In a separate meeting, the chief secretary directed the provincial education secretary to resolve the issues being faced by professors and subject specialists associated with the government education sector.

He ordered the education secretary to get directions from the education minister for resolving the issues related to promotion, other service-related privileges and teaching allowance of professors and subject specialists.
