Chandigarh/ Punjab (January 09, 2014): Punjab police chief DGP Sumedh Saini has come to the defence of Punjab cabinet minister Bikram Majithia, a senior politician belonging to the ruling Badal regime. Bikram Majithia has been named as patron of drug trade in Majha region of Punjab by drug-kingpin and former Punjab cop Jagdish Bhola, who is facing charges of drug smuggling and trade in a global drug racket related case.

Sumedh Saini who himself is facing serious allegations of carrying out mass level human rights abuses in Punjab during 1980-90s, is considered to be blue-eyed boy of Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal.

Addressing a press conference, DGP Sumedh Saini did not favour handing over the case to the CBI. “Going by the fact that the Punjab Police has worked in tandem with the Intelligence Bureau, Border Security Force, Narcotics Control Bureau and Enforcement on the problem of drugs in the state, handing over the case to CBI will mean giving in to a baseless demand of a hardened criminal.

“It will take away the efforts of our team and remove focus from the investigation,” he said.

Notably, Punjab Police chief dismissed allegations made by drug smuggler Jagdish Bhola over the “involvement” of Revenue Minister Bikram Singh Majithia in the exposed multi-crore drug racket, while describing it as ridiculous.

Sumedh Saini reportedly disclosed some facts related to the case. “The police recovered 100.9 kg heroin in 2011, 278.4 kg in 2012 and 416 kg in 2013. From Bhola alone, the recoveries included 28.5 kg heroin, 14.8 kg ICE, more than one tonne raw material for preparing ICE, 13 weapons and $900”, he disclosed.

Sumedh Saini said that apart from Jagdish Bhola, the police had arrested 50 more persons who were under investigation. He also rubbished allegations of the involvement of Patiala SSP Hardayal Mann in any drug racket, as alleged by Jagdish Bhola.

It may be recalled that Jagdish Bhola, after one of his recent court appearances, had disclosed the name of Bikram Majithia as mastermind of drug racket. He had openly named Bikram Majithia before media and said that he would disclose name of another Badal Dal leader from Doaba region of Punajb who is involved in drug smuggling.

The demand for ordering CBI inquiry or a probe by sitting judge of the High Court is growing strong in wake of disclosure of Bikram Majithia’s name. Various quarters, including the opposition Congress party, are emphasising the need of CBI inquiry into the matter.

But the Punjab government is attempting to undermine the matter. Various government officials, including Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal have ruled out CBI inquiry in to this matter.

In a press conference, Maheshinder Singh Grewal, newly appointed Advisor to the Chief Minister, said, “The Shiromani Akali Dal will not have the government ordering a CBI inquiry. Majithia’s being open to any investigation in his private capacity only shows his conviction in transparency.”
