S. Rajwinder Singh Rahi said “Hugh Johnston is a Professor at the University of British Columbia and has done thorough research on the events related to the Komagatamaru Voyage and the same can clearly be seen in his book”.

Rahi further said that he himself referred to his book while working upon his project titled “Komagatamaru Da Asli Sach”.

The first addition of the book by Hugh Johnston was published in 1979 by Oxford University and later an revised edition was published by University of British Columbia.

While further providing the information he said “Professor Ajaib Singh Tiwana and Harcharan Singh Chahal has translated the book in Punjabi language which is edited by Professor Jagmohan Singh who happened to be the nephew of Saheed Bhagat Singh and Narpinder. It was published by “Sarokar di Awaz” magazine Patiala , Desh Bhagat Yadgar Committee Jalandhar and ‘Bhagat Singh Century Foundation’   Khattkar Kalan.

Both the publisher and the editors intentionally removed the phrase ‘Sikh Challenge’ and rewrote it as ‘Canada De Nasali Vitkaray De Virudh Azadi Layee‘ (Against Colour Bar of Canada and for Freedom).

According to Rahi the word ‘Sikh’ has been replaced with Bhartiya or Hindustani (Indian) in the translated version of the book.

“At the time of translation the title as well as the references in the book were tampered with by the leftist of Punjab which is a clear example of sheer intellectual injustice with the Sikh psyche as well unjust to author of the book”, said Rajwinder Singh Rahi.

“Hugh Johnston at some occasion was pressurised by the leftists of Punjab to change the title of his book from ‘Sikh Challenge’ to ‘Indian’, but instead replied in straight forward manner that all the relevant historic documents are inundated with Sikh names. It were the Sikhs who spilled there blood and made sacrifices even endured capital punishment, how could do such a grave injustice by writing them as ‘Indians'”, he added.

According to Rahi “[t]his is not the first instance that the history of the Sikhs has been tampered with. While writing the history of Gaddar Movement the Sikh element of the movement was deliberately concealed so that the movement can be project from the perspective of Indian Nationalism.
