Chanidgarh: The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Wednesday (Jan. 21) ordered a stay on the transfer of Assistant Director of Enforcement Directorate Niranjan Singh who is probing the alleged Rs 6,000-crore drug racket and money laundering case in Punjab.
“Expressing surprise over the government’s decision to transfer Singh to Kolkata at a time when the probe is at a crucial stage, the Division Bench comprising Justices S K Mittal and Deepak Sibal directed the Enforcement Directorate to produce before it the record pertaining to January 16 transfer order of Singh on the next date of hearing, which has been fixed for February 2”, notes a news reported by Indian Express (IE).
While summoning the record over the issue from the union government on February two, a division bench of the court comprising justices S K Mittal and Depak Sibal stayed the implementation of the transfer order of the ED official.
The court directive came on a PIL filed by local advocate Navkiran Singh on behalf of an NGO Lawyers for Human Rights International.
The Tribune (TT) notes that the petitioners had said ED official Niranjan Singh’s transfer was neither in public interest, nor in the interest of justice. The case was being supervised by the High Court for more than a year and status reports were being filed by state and central agencies. The transfer of an investigating officer, playing an important role in the investigation, was not beyond suspicion.
It is notable that the ED is holding probe into Punjab minister Bikram Majithia’s links with multi-crores drugs racket.
