DSGPC President asked to remove turban at airport in Rome; Sikhs protested outside Italian Embassy

Rome/New Delhi (August 07, 2013): It is learnt that the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) president Manjit Singh GK was asked to remove his turban during a security check at Rome airport on the intervening night of 6 and 7 August, 2013.

As per information Manjeet Singh GK, who refused to remove the turban was on his way from Rome to Dubai. Following the incident DSGMC general secretary Manjinder Singh Sirsa led a protest outside Italian Embassy in New Delhi.

Meanwhile, as per media reports, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal urged India’s central government to mount pressure on foreign countries so that turbans worn by Sikh travellers were not ordered removed for security checks at international airports.

As per media reports Parkash Singh Badal said that the turban was an integral part of the Sikh identity. He said it was unfortunate that Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) President Manjit Singh GK was asked to remove his turban during frisking at the Rome international airport.
