Enforcement of Nationalism via Jan Gan Man to prevail: SC says If You Have to Stand for 40 times, You Must

New Delhi: The Indian Supreme Court yesterday said that playing of Jan Gan Man anthem before the movie screenings shall be compulsory event at the film festival and that all people will have to stand to show respect. A bench of Justices Dipak Mishra and Amitava Roy observed that the conditions imposed by its order on November 30 can not be relaxed because some foreigners will be attending the movie screenings or multiple movies would be screened.

Notably, organizers of an international film festival in Kerala had sought exemption from complying November 30 order on the ground that about 1500 foreign guests will be attending the festival and there would be multiple screenings during the film festival.

“Only because certain foreigners are here and they may have some problems, should we recall our order? Why should we recall our orders only to oblige foreigners? If there are 40 movies running in different shows, you will have to, well, stand 40 times,” said the bench.

Judges of the Supreme Court of India reportedly went on to claim that it was“sacred obligation” of those attending cinema halls to watch movies to stand during the playing of Jan Gan Man anthem as a token of respect for it.

“Every country feels proud of its national anthem but if we pass some orders, we don’t understand why there is so much of hue and cry?” judged reportedly said.

The Court said that physically disabled or handicapped persons are not requested to stand up during the playing of Jan Gan Man but they will have to show their respect for it in some other manner.

Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi said that the central government will issue guidelines within 10 days on “how the physically challenged or physically handicapped persons shall show respect to the anthem”.
