European Referendum: Justin Welby should stay clear of the Xenophobic agenda, Sikh Federation UK

March 11, 2016 | By

London: In a written statement Sikh Federation UK chiar Bhai Amrik Singh said: “There are many valid reasons for or against being a part of the European Union which revolve around individual and collective rights and societal issues. However, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, by saying it is ‘outrageous’ to describe people who are worried about the impact of migration as racist is in danger of playing into the xenophobic anti immigrant far right agenda.”

“Most faiths teach about universal brother/sisterhood and to reject xenophobic arguments. The Archbishop of Canterbury should be leading the fight against xenophobic or neo-liberal arguments. Rather than focusing on immigration and fear Justin Welby should be emphasising the positives and talking about the significance of the EU for jobs, trade, rights for employees, anti-discrimination, human rights and environmental issues.”

“Immigration is the most charged and contentious issue in the referendum debate. However, one of the EU’s founding principles is the free movement of people (along with the free movement of goods, services and money). Rather than just focus on the UK having no control over immigration from other EU member states and pointing out it puts pressure on public services, such as housing, jobs and the NHS he should be giving the counter arguments.”

“He should be saying from an employer’s point of view, immigrants from the EU tend to be better educated than UK nationals – around 32 per cent have a degree, compared with 21 per cent of UK citizens. From an economic perspective he should be saying, people moving over from the EU since 2000 have contributed 34 per cent more financially to the UK than they have cost us.”

“Unfortunately some reading Justin Welby’s views may conclude his personal view is to leave the EU as he says far too little on the benefits of the EU.”

The Sikh Federation (UK) has been leading the way on behalf of the Sikh community in terms of putting out the full range of arguments and are campaigning for a vote to stay in the EU.

The Sikh Federation is the largest and most prominent campaigning Sikh organisation in the UK that leads on political engagement for the British Sikh community. The Sikh Diaspora across the globe look to the Sikh Federation (UK) for leadership and direction.
