Chandigarh: Bhai Baldev Singh Wadala, a leader of the Sikh Sadbhawna Dal (SSD) and former Ragi of Darbar Sahib, has alleged that the SGPC was procuring furniture from a foreign company for its Saragarhi Sarai at prices higher than the market rates.

Addressing a press conference in Amritsar on August 09, Bhai Baldev Singh Wadala said that an agreement was arrived between the SGPC and a Hong Kong-based firm. He added that the furniture was made in China and the deal was finalised at $3.33 lakh (more than 2.2 crores), of which about 60 percent has already been paid.

He questioned the motive behind buying foreign-made furniture for 238 rooms of the Saragarhi Sarai, when international- quality items were available in the Kartarpur market.

Bhai Wadala maintained that Rs 18 crore was initially allocated to build the Sarai but the work was yet to be finished even after spending more than Rs. 65 crores.

He also accused the SGPC of raising the building of the Sarai without obtaining an NOC from the Municipal Corporation, Amritsar.

SGPC additional secretary Daljit Singh Bedi refuted Bhai Baldev Singh Wadala’s allegations.
