Karachi, Pakistan (June 10, 2014): According to recent media reports Pakistani officials said that two gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire near the Karachi international airport on today. The Airport was previously attacked two days back that left at least 35 people dead.
As per information the gunmen targeted the training academy of the Airport Security Force. Officials say they fled after security forces retaliated.
“The Pakistani Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack, which prompted officials to briefly close the airport as they did after Sunday’s attack. The militant group also claimed responsibility for Sunday’s attack”, a Voice Of America reports reads.
Earlier today, the Interior Minister Nisar Ali Khan said Sunday’s attackers carried rocket launchers and rocket-propelled grenades. He told the national parliament the attackers tried to destroy aircraft but were prevented from doing so by ASF personnel who sacrificed their lives to “save national assets.”
The interior minister also said the attackers were carrying a huge quantity of food and medicine — what he called an indication that they had planned to create a hostage situation.
Officials say 10 gunmen were among those killed on Sunday, as well as seven workers, whose bodies were found on Tuesday in an airport cold storage facility. Investigators say the bodies of the cargo company workers were burned beyond recognition. The workers had sought refuge in the facility, but it was engulfed in flames as gunmen attacked the airport.
In another development, the Pakistani military carried out a series of air strikes today on suspected militant targets in the northwestern Khyber region. The military says at least 25 attackers have been killed.
