Chandigarh: It just over a month when Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) won Dhuri state assembly seat from Congress, the election of ruling party candidate Gobind Longowal is challenged by Gagan Deep Barnala in Punjab and Haryana High Court.
Challenging Gobind Longowal’s election, Simar Partap Barnala’s father Gagan Deep Barnala alleged irregularities in the poll process. The petition filed under the provisions of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, will now come up for scrutiny on July 3.
Badal Dal’s Gobind Longowal had defeated Congress party’s Simar Pratap Barnala by a margin of 37,501 votes in the Dhuri byelection.
It is notable that with the win, the ruling party has gained majority on it’s own. SAD (B) now holds 59 seats in 117-member state assembly.
