April 7, 2015 | By

Chandigarh: While accepting Badal Dal leader Darbara Singh alias guru’s petition challenging election of Congress candidate and Punjabi folk singer Mohammad Sadiq, the Punjab and Haryana High Court today declared the election of Mahammad Sadiq as “invalid” and set it aside.

Mohammad Sadiq has defeated Darbara Singh guru from Bhadaur constituency in 2012 state assembly polls.

His election was challenged by Darbara Singh.

In his petition Darbara Singh had challenged the election on the grounds that someone not belonging to Hindu, Sikh or Buddhist religions could not claim the benefit of the reserved quota as Sadiq had done.

Sadiq had maintained that he had converted to Sikhism. He had maintained that though his mother Prasanni Devi was a Muslim, he never professed Islam and had always professed Sikhism and was a scheduled caste.

The bench of justice NK Sanghi reserved the judgment on January 21, 2015 following the conclusion of arguments.
