Jalandhar/ Ludhiana, Punjab (April 16, 2013): In a wake of recent decision of Supreme Court of India clearing the execution of Sikh political prisoner Professor Davinderpal Singh Bhullar, various Sikhs circles are attempting to prevent the execution but there are reports in media that the state may attempt to secretly hang Prof. Bhullar.

As per a Times of India (TOI) news report: “With speculations rife over the “planned secret hanging” of Devinderpal Singh Bhullar, whose plea for commuting death sentence into life imprisonment was recently rejected by the Supreme Court, the BSF has been deployed in Punjab on the request of the state government”.

According to a news report by a Punjabi vernacular – Daily Ajit, para-military forces, including BSF and CRPF have been deployed at nook and corner of Punjab.

“Apprehending law and order problems in Punjab if Bhullar is hanged, two companies each of BSF have been deployed in Amritsar and Ludhiana and one company has been stationed near Jalandhar”, TOI has added.

On the other hand Lawyers for Human Rights International (LFHRI) Secretary Adovcate Navkiran Singh is reported to have during a press conference at Chandigarh that it would be illegal to hang Prof. Bhullar in secrecy as his execution is prohibited by international legal standards because no one could be execution if he is physically and mentally unfit. Prof. Bhullar is undergoing treatment since 2010 at Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences (IHBAS) in Delhi for depression with suicidal tendencies.

BSF inspector general Aditya Mishra reportedly told TOI on Monday that they had provided five companies of BSF to the Punjab government following a request made on April 14, 2013.

He, however, denied commenting on why the BSF companies have been demanded by Punjab government.

Reacting to the deployment of BSF, Sikh radical organization Dal Khalsa’s spokesperson Kanwarpal Singh reportedly said, “I don’t understand what the state government is anticipating. On the one hand chief minister P S Badal is meeting the Prime Minister for commuting death sentence of Bhullar while on the other, they are creating panic by deploying BSF”.
