New Delhi: The Indian government has set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) for re-investigation into the November 1984 massacre related cases in Delhi and other states. An order was issued on Thursday (Feb. 12) by Indian Home Minister Rajnath Singh announcing the formation of the SIT.
The SIT will straight away file chargesheet in the cases which Delhi Police did not investigate or simply closed for lack of evidence. It is being considered that the SIT will re-investigation cases against Congress leaders Jagdish Tytler and Sajjan Kumar, where chargesheet was never filed by the Delhi police and fresh charges could be filed in these cases.
During his previous 49-day term as Delhi CM, AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal had recommended setting up an SIT to probe the November 1984 massacre related cases in Delhi and it has been one of the priority areas of the Aam Aadmi Party.
The SIT has been constituted following a recommendation of a committee, headed by former Supreme Court Justice (retd) G P Mathur, which was set up to look into the possibility of re-investigation of the November 1984 Sikh massacre related cases.
The three-member SIT comprises Pramod Asthana, 1986 batch IPS officer of Manipur-Tripura cadre, Kumar Gyanesh, additional DCP (security) Delhi Police and retired district and sessions judge Rakesh Kapoor. It will submit its report within six months.
