India: Execution of Karnatka duo stayed by SCI; Prof. Bhullar’s case is pending with MHA

New Delhi, India (August 22, 2013): As per recent reports the execution of death sentence of Shivu and Jadeswamey of Karnatka has been stayed by the Supreme Court of India on August 21, 2013. They were scheduled to be executed on August 22.

It is notable that no execution date was announced for Sikh political prisoner Professor Devender Pal Singh Bhullar who is also facing threat of execution in India.

On August 20, 2013 the Amnesty India issued an Urgent Action Appeal calling upon people to write letters to the President of India against these executions.

A representative of Amnesty India told Sikh Siyasat News (SSN) that there was information that Shivu and Jadeswamey were to be executed on August 22. Though no execution date was announced for Devender Pal Singh Bhullar but his review petition was rejected by SCI and he remains at the risk imminent risk of execution.

It is notable that a medical board constituted by Delhi government had confirmed sickness of Prof. Bhullar; as a result his execution was deferred by Delhi’s Lt. Governor, who had forwarded his file to the Minister of Home Affairs (India) to take final decision in this matter. As per reports Prof. Bhullar’s case is currently pending with the MHA.
