Victoria, Australia: Indian High Commissioner in Australia and Consulate General of India in Melbourne yesterday faced strong protest by Sikh Sangat during their visit to a Gudwara Sahib in Tarneit area of Victoria state in Australia. Indian High Commissioner Dr. A. M. Gondane and Consulate General of India Melbourne Ms. Manika Jain were questioned by Sikh sangat about arrest, detention and alleged torture of U. K. Sikh citizen Jagtar Singh Johal aka Jaggi.
The protesters, mostly youth, said Indian authorities could visit the Gurdwara Sahib but as a part of the Sangat and they won’t be allowed any special treatment in Gurdwara Sahib. They also raised slogans denouncing ill-treatment of Sikhs by the Indian state.
The protesters also accused Indian authorities in Punjab for preparing a list of active Sikh youth and for targeting them with arrest and detention.
In a video, broadcasted live by a Melbourne based Punjabi radio, the Indian official were seen offering clarifications and complaining against their treatment with protest. But the protesters accused Indian authorities for turning blind eye towards alleged torture of Sikh youth in custody while make a specific reference to Jagtar Singh Jaggi’s case.
