Chandigarh/Punjab (March 05, 2013): It is learnt that India’s National Commission for Women (NCW) on March 05, 2013 asked the Punjab Police chief to probe the attack on a woman by policemen in the state’s Tarn Taran district.
As per information the NCW has issued a notice to the Punjab’s director general of police (DGP) to investigate the incident and apprise the commission about the actual facts of the case along with action taken report within three days.
The commission has reportedly took suo motu cognizance of the media reports of the incident and sent the notice, NCW sources said.
It is notable that Punjab cops in Tarn Taran town were seen clearly on camera hitting a young woman who had reportedly tried to complain about harassment by a truck driver. This episode has once again revealed the degenerated state of policing affairs in the state of Punjab.
It is notable that the Punjab Police chief Sumedh Saini is himself facing charges of human rights abuses, including practising enforced disappearances, torture and custodial & extra-judicial killings.
