Indus Water Treaty befitted Pakistan and rest of India, but J&K suffered huge losses: Omar Abdullah

Jammu & Kashmir/ India (August 23, 2014): Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minster Omar Abdullah today said that the state of Jammu and Kashmir suffered losses on account of Indus Water Treaty (IWT) that was signed between India and Pakistan back in 1960.

While speaking in a high level meeting of officials from India’s Power Ministry and the state Power development department, J&K CM Omar Abdullah said: Pakistan and rest of India were benefited from the Indus Water Treaty, but on the other had the state of Jammu and Kashmir has been put to disadvantageous position.

Omar Abdullah said due to this treaty, Jammu and Kashmir cannot utilize its water resources to its will for generating hydro power, irrigating agriculture fields and providing drinking water to the people.

The Indus Waters Treaty, a water-sharing treaty between India and Pakistan, brokered by the World Bankwas signed in Karachi on September 19, 1960 by Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and President of Pakistan Ayub Khan.
