New Delhi: As per reports in Indian media, the Thailand authorities have “deported” Jagtar Singh Tara who was arrested in Thailand few days back.
“On the run for almost a decade, Jagtar Singh Tara, […], has been deported by Thailand”, notes a news reported by The Tribune (TT).
General Prawut Thawonsiri, a spokesman for the Thai police, reportedly said Jagtar Singh Tara had been deported to India on Thursday night after the Supreme Court approved an “extradition” request from New Delhi.
It was not clear from the news reports that if he was “deported” or “extradited” under some “extradition treaty”.
It may be recalled that Bhai Jagtar Singh Tara had escaped from the high-security Burail prison in Chandigarh in 2004 and was on the run before being arrested by Thailand authorities on January 5, 2015. Interpol had issued a Red Corner Notice on the request of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI – India).
As per reports the two Punjab police teams will be in Dlehi to bring Jagtar Singh Tara to Punjab.
A police team led by Rajinder Singh Sohal, was in Bangkok for liaison and co-ordination with the Thai authorities in addition to another three-member police team.
After being presented in the court on Saturday, a team of Patiala police will seek his custody in the Rulda Singh murder case. Punjab Rashtriya Sikh Sangat president Rulda Singh was shot late evening of July 28 2009, by two assailants who later fled in a waiting car.
“We will try to get him in our custody as he is wanted in the murder case registered with us in Tripuri police station”, said Patiala SSP Gurmeet Chauhan. “Our team is in touch with the authorities. He has many pending cases”, he stated.
