Jat Agitators Torch 2 Of Police Buses, DSP Among 18 Cops Hurt As Police Resorts To Lathicharge

Chandigarh: The ongoing Jat agitation for the reservation in the government jobs and other government institutions on Sunday turned violent near Dhani Gopal village in Fatehabad, district as the protesters torched 2 buses belonging to the state police department and injured atleast 18 police personnel.

It was reported by the media that a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) and two Inspectors — one a woman — were among the injured. Three mediapersons were injured as agitators snatched their belongings and smashed their cameras. Some protesters were injured when the police used tear gas and resorted to a lathi charge.
Fatehabad Superintendent of Police OP Narwal stated that the incident occurred near Dhani Gopal, where the police had set up a barricade to check vehicles.
“The police stopped some tractor-trailers of agitators brandishing sharp-edged weapons. They were moving towards the dharna site at Dhani Gopal. DSP Gurdial Singh, incharge of the naka, told them to leave their weapons before proceeding to the dharna site, but they did not relent,” he reportedly said.
Furthermore adding to his statement he said that “Many other tractor-trailers carrying protesters reached the spot soon afterwards. While the DSP was speaking to the agitators, a youth hit him on the head with a wooden log from the rear, injuring him critically.”
Moreover while adding to his statement he said that the police tried to disperse the agitators by using tear gas, but the protesters, who outnumbered them, attacked the personnel, injuring at least 18 of them.
However, Ram Kumar Kaswan, a resident of Ghani Gopal, blamed the police for the incident.
“The police tried to stop peaceful agitators on way to the dharna site, leading to the faceoff,” he alleged.
Three journalists with local newspaper from Fatehabad district were allegedly held hostage and beaten up by the agitators and their belongings snatched. They returned to Fatehabad after some villagers freed them.
Two of them — Amit Rukhaya and Bajrang Meena — worked for vernacular dailies and Jaspal Singh was from a television news channel.
“When a fight broke out between protesters and the police, we ran to safety. We took shelter in a police bus which had some personnel. The agitators attacked the bus with stones before setting it and another bus on fire,” said Jaspal Singh journalist that was injured in the attack.
