J&K CM Omar Abdullah loses from Sonwar, Wins from Beerwah

Jammu and Kashmir: In a major blow to the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (NC), state Chief Minister Omar Abdullah lost his Sonwar seat in the state’s assembly polls.

Tweeting about the same, Omar Abdullah said, “Congratulations to Ashraf Mir for his victory in Sonwar. I wish him & the people all good luck for the next 6 years. He’s now my local MLA.”

Mohammad Ashraf Mir of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) won from Sonwar seat. While Mir bagged 14,283 votes, Omar finished with 9,500 votes.

Omar Abdullah who also contented the election from Beerwah won this seat. In Beerwah, Omar had been leading in the earlier rounds of counting. However, Congress rival Nazir Ahmad Khan overtook the chief minister in the later rounds. In the last two rounds, Omar managed to bounce back and win the seat by 902 votes, triggering off celebration from NC supporters.
