Justice Markandey Katju to visit Behbal Kalan to probe police firing incident

Chandigarh: Former Supreme Court of India Judge Markandey Katju is set to visit Behbal Kalan village near Kotkapura in Faridkot district to get first-hand information about the October 14 (2014) police firing incident wherein two Sikh youths were killed by the Punjab police.

Justice Katju will be on a three-day visit that will begin on January 30, Advocate Harpal Singh Cheema of Sikhs for Human Rights (SFHR) told Sikh Siyasat News (SSN) over phone.

J. Markandey Katju will record statements of at least 35 villagers, including injured, relatives of the deceased and those whose property and vehicles were damaged after the firing.

Advo. Harpal Singh Cheema further said that Justice Katju was requested to hold an independent probe into the incident by Sikhs for Human Rights, Punjab Human Rights Organisation and Lawyers for Human Rights International.

“Katju’s visit is aimed at investigating the incident minutely. The report compiled by him (Katju Commission) will be submitted to the People Union of Civil Liberties (PUCL) to take up the matter at the international level”, he added.
