Karnataka: BJP CM quits before Floor Test; JD (S)’s Kumaraswamy to take Oath as CM on Monday

Karnataka: High voltage political drama in Karnataka ended this evening as BJP Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa today admitted that he could not get the numbers required to form government and resigned without facing a trust vote. Karnataka had caught attention as no single party gained majority after the state assembly election results were announced few days back.

Elections held on May 12 to 222 of the 224 constituencies in the state and results votes were counted on May 15. Though BJP had emerged as single largest party in Karnataka but it was short of majority mark. BJP has 104 MLAs. Congress (78 MLAs) and Janta Dal (Secular) (37 MLAs) had announced a coalition after hearing the results but the state government, having close ties with the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS), had invited BJP to form the government in the state.

Opposing the move, the Congress and Janta Dal (S) knocked the doors of Supreme Court of India (SCI) that held mid-nigh hearing of an urgent petition but refused to stay the swearing in ceremony of BS Yeddyurappa. BS Yeddyurappa sworn in as CM of Karnataka on May 17. The governor had given 15 days time to the BJP to prove its majority but the SCI cut short this time and told BJP to have floor test today.

Opposition leaders, including Congress chief Rahul Gandhi, Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayavati and Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal have expressed satisfaction over today’s events. AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal said that BJP’s attempt to subvert the democracy has failed.

JD (S) leader H. D. Kumaraswamy has announced to take oath as Karnataka CM on Monday. As per media reports, Rashtriya Janta Dal (RJD) leader Tejasvey Yadav and Bangal CM and Trinmool Congress leader Mamta Banerjee has announced to attend Kumaraswamy’s swearing in ceremony.

Meanwhile Congress party today released few audio clips maintaining that BJP was trying to buy it’s MLAs. Commenting on it Congress chief Rahul Gandhi termed Indian Prime Minister as “bharishtachar” maintaining that the PM was involved in attempt to bribe the Congress MLAs to extend support to BJP government in Karnataka.
