Amritsar: The Punjab Cabinet gave its nod to the setting up of Khalsa University in Amritsar last evening. The decision was announced after a meeting of Punjab Cabinet held at Chandigarh under the Chairmanship of Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal.

“In order to impart quality Higher education to the people, the Cabinet also approved the setting up of two Self-financed Private Universities ‘Sri Guru Ram Das University of Health Sciences’ and Khalsa University both at Sri Amritsar”, reads a statement issued by CM’s Office.

With this, the total number of private universities in the state will be 15, notes The Tribune (TT).

Reacting to Punjab Cabinet’s move, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee chief Capt Amarinder Singh on  said if Khalsa University was set up by passing an Act by the Badal government, the Congress, on coming to power, would scrap the Act to re-affiliate the colleges with Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar.

There was opposition to converting the Khalsa College into the Khalsa University as certain sections believed that the move would undermine the historic institution.
