Khanna Sikh Youth shot at Gurdaspur Shiv Sena leader Harminder Soni: says Police

Gurdaspur, Punjab: Sikh youth who shot at Gurdaspur Shiv Sena leader earlier today is identified as Kashmir Singh s/o Hari Singh of Village Gall Waddi, police district Khanna, District Fatehgarh Sahib, the police maintained today.

Senior police officers, including Gurdaspur SSP Gurpreet Singh Toor and IG Border Range Mittla, address a press conference this afternoon and said that it was an individual act.

Preliminary investigation reveals that Kashmir Singh not linked to any organisation and acted on his own, police officers reportedly told media.

Police said that Kashmir Singh had served some period in some case in Nabha Jail about a year ago.

Kashmir Singh was reportedly angry against Shiv Sena leader Harminder Soni over his ‘anti-Sikh’ role in Sikh protest movement against proposed hanging of Sikh political prisoner Balwant Singh Rajoana.

Police said that Kashmir Singh headed for Gurdaspur from Chankaur Shaib on April 8 and spent the April 8 night at Baba Bakala. He stayed at Kalanaur on April 9 and spent April 10 night at Gurdwara Buraj Sahib, Baba Bakala; while he stayed at Gurdwara Kandh Sahib in Batala on 11 April.

Police maintains that Harminder Soni was shot at by Kashmir Singh by his .315 bore desi weapon.

Harminder Soni was shot at around 8:30 am after he finished a volleyball game at Fish Park Gurdaspur.

As per information Kashmri Singh went close to Harminder Soni and asked him if he was Soni. After the Shiv Sena leader affirmed his identity Kashmir Singh reportedly fired at him with a desi fire weapon. It is notable that Shiv Sena leader was accompanied by his four gunmen when he was attacked.

Police has registered FIR number 35 against Kashmir Singh under section 307 (IPC) and sections 25/54/59 of Arms Act.

He was not produced before the magistrate till the filing of this news report.

Meanwhile, condition of attacked Shiv Sena leader is said to stable. He is being treated at Escorts Fortis Hospital in Amritsar.

Shiv Sena has given a Gurdaspur Bandh call on April 13.
