Chandigarh/ Punjab (July 1, 2014): After having all praise for Indian Prime Minister Narendera Modi, civil society activist and former top cop Kiran Bedi, in a strategic move, on Monday “volunteered” to help the Punjab government in its fight against the drug menace. According to her, the government of Punjab, her home state, must make use of her experience in tackling the issue of drugs and rehabilitating addicts.

As per a report published by Hindustan Times, she wrote on her Twitter account: “I volunteer to put together a realistic plan to deal with Drug Menace in Punjab, if Punjab Govt wants it. I want to see my State recover (sic).”

She had run drug abuse treatment centres for 20 years and also worked on drug trafficking as part of the Narcotics Control Bureau, added the report.

Bedi, who underlined that she has a doctorate on drug abuse and domestic violence, added, “There is a need for a holistic plan to save Punjab from the drug menace, which involves cutting the supply chain and treating the addicts, and I see an important role for myself as a volunteer.”
The SAD-BJP Punjab government has been running a campaign against drugs ever since the menace became an issue in the state in the Lok Sabha polls. Bedi said she had set up a drug abuse treatment centre in Tihar Jail as incharge and successfully treated a large number of drug addicts.
