While Simarjit was arrested from Chuharpur, located on the banks of the Sutlej on Friday (April 18) after he launched a “satyagraha” against the sand mafia in the state allegedly patronised by the Shiromani Akali Dal, his brother Balwinder Singh Bains was taken into custody from outside a local hotel on the Ferozepur road where he was to hold a press conference. He was arrested under Sections 107 and 151 of the Cr. PC and sent in judicial custody on Friday (April 18), notes The Tribune (TT).
Meanwhile, former Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira on Saturday alleged that by arresting Bains brothers and their supporters on “false” charges of theft and illegal mining, the state government had admitted to its nexus with the sand mafia.
