Amritsar, Punjab (October 28, 2011): The Shiromani Gurdwara Pharbadnhak Committee (SGPC) has come under criticism from All India Sikh Students Federation (AISSF) led by Karnail Singh Peer Mohammad for delay in construction of a memorial for the Sikhs brutally massacred during the Hondh Massacre in November 1984 in Haryana. It is notable that on March 6 this year the Akal Takhat Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh had laid the foundation for the Sikh Genocide Memorail at Hondh Chillar Village.
AISSF (Peer Mohammad) has asked SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar to begin construction of memorial by October 31. If SCPC fails to adhere to the same, AISSF would start construction of the memorial at Hondh-Chillar village, that was destroyed by genocidal incident back in November 1984.
On the other hand the SGPC President Avtar Singh Makkar said he has no problem if AISSF comes forward to construct the memorial.
“SGPC realised that there was no use to construct memorial there since none of the affected family was living at Hondh-Chillar and if needed, the memorial would be constructed after thorough discussion with the affected families” Makkar is reported to have said by PTI.
SGPC is a statutory body controlled by members affiliated to Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal), also called Badal Dal. This party has totally allied with the Indian state in Indo-Sikh political conflict.
Hondh Chillar village is known as living paradigm of Sikh Genocide 1984, as half of the native Sikh population of this village was massacred in an organized pogrom, while others were displaced permanently.
