More than 50 Farmers Committed Suicides in Punjab in past 30 days: BKU

Chandigarh: The Bhartiya Kisan Union (Ekta – Ugrahan) has released a report revealing that in the past 30 days 57 farmers had committed suicide across the state of Punjab.

Releasing the report, BKU leaders Sukhpal Singh Manak and Darbara Singh Fajala said that ” India Prime Minister Narinder Modi had promised to double the income of the Farmers by the year 2020, but instead of witnessing an increase in the income we are witnessing an alarming rise in the rate of suicide among the debt ridden farmers”.

Furthermore, they claimed that “as per their respective survey from from September 8th till October 8th around 50 farmers took their lives, following from 8th October to 8th November the number of farmers dead rose to 57.

BKU leaders said that the figures were based upon the news reports about Farmers’ suicides in Punjab. They said that the exact number is bound to higher as not all suicide cases are reported by the media, further claimed the farmer leaders.

While interacting with the media Bhartiya Kisan Union’s state chief Joginder Singh Ugrahan reportedly said that the graph of farmer’s suicide is rising considerably at an alarming rate, whereas both the state and central governments are cold shouldered towards this deplorable plight of the farmers.
